Bill Richardson walked to the front gate and looked out to the road beyond. There was nothing. No clue as to what was heading their way. He turned back to the now more than three hundred men who would form the line of their attack formation. Behind them were women and children. They had decided that anyone ten years of age or older had to fight. He thought about that for a moment. How had they let things get this far?

He knew that he was at least partially to blame. He should never have believed that Jonah’s patch was going to work. Yes, the kid was brilliant and had demonstrated as much on several occasions, but that wasn’t why Bill had bought the Jonah’s idea. He’d believed it because he wanted to believe it. He had believed it because it would save his political career.

A cold shiver ran down his spine. Was that really what he had done? Had he sacrificed hundreds of thousands of lives because he thought that he might someday become the Governor of the City State of New York? Regardless of what he had thought might happen, that was, in fact the outcome. He was now the Governor, and he knew he damn well better start acting like it.

The radio on his belt chirped, and he retrieved it to hit the call button.

“This is Gamma Actual,” he said. “Send it.”

“I think we know where the device is,” Devon said.

Bill felt a wave of relief wash over him. “Thank God,” he said. “How long until you get to it?”

“We can’t,” Devon replied. “We’re completely blocked off. There’s an ocean of those things between us and the device.”

“What about going underground?” Bill offered.

“That’s the plan,” Devon said. “But we don’t know what we’re going to run into. So, if you never hear from us again, you’ll know what happened.” He hesitated for a moment. “There is another option.”

“What is it?”

“There’s a girl out there. She’s only eighteen, but she’s armed and she has eyes on the device.”

“Can you get her to help?”

“I’m working on it, but she turned her radio off,” Devon replied. “She said her name was Clarissa.”

Bill understood what Devon was implying. “That’s a pretty long shot,” he said.

“The age is right,” Devon said.

“Okay,” Bill said. “I’ll try her cell.”

Bill clipped the radio to his belt and retrieved his cell phone, then found a number in his contacts list and hit the call button. “Come on,” he said. “Pick up.”

There was a “click” after the phone stopped ringing and then a girl’s voice came on.

“Hey, this is Clarissa. You know what to do.”

Bill waited for the tone. “Clarissa, it’s Bill Richardson. Call me, please. It’s important.” He hit the “end call” button and then slipped the phone back into his jacket pocket.

“They’re waiting,” Janice said from next to him.

“Waiting?” Bill asked. “For what?”

Losing her patience, Janice went nose-to-nose with him. “Haven’t you ever heard of a wartime president?” she asked. “Well, you’re now a wartime governor, and wartime governors make speeches before sending people to their deaths.
